LG has revealed its own attempt at the ultrabook segment, the LG Xnote Z330, with Intel’s Core i5 and i7 processors and more than a hint of Apple’s MacBook Air to the styling. Built around a 13.3-inch 1366 x 768 display – that, thanks to LG’s 8mm-thin bezel Shuriken tech, fits into  the space a 12-inch panel would usually demand – the Z330 is 14.7mm thick and 1.21kg, and can run for over 6hrs on a single charge.

Inside there’s a choice of Intel’s Core i5-2467M or Core i7-2637M processors, paired with 4GB of RAM and a choice of 120GB SATA 6Gbps SSD or a 256GB SATA 3Gbps SSD. Graphics are courtesy of Intel’s HD GPU, while connectivity includes WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0+HS, Intel WIDI, USB 3.0 and a microSD card reader.

LG is particularly pushing the Xnote Z330′s rapid boot abilities, with the ultrabook being ready to go in just 7s (resume time). It’ll also shut down quickly too, being off in 9.9s. The company reckons the combination of the speed fettling, the second-gen Intel chips and the SSD storage makes the Z330 20-percent faster at multitasking than its ultraportable predecessors.

Pricing is set at 1.7m – 2.6m Won ($1,509 – $1,863) depending on processor and other specifications when the notebook arrives in South Korea in the middle of this month. No news on when we might see the LG Xnote Z330 arrive in the US.

It’s Demo Day for Gazelle Lab, the new Tampa Bay-based TechStars Network member, which is seeing its first class of startups launch this morning in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida. The accelerator, based on the successful TechStars model, was founded in early 2011 with three goals: build an entrepreneurship community in the Tampa Bay area, create a seed stage pipeline (something notoriously lacking in Florida today) and create more jobs.

Despite its struggle to register as a tech hotspot, there’s actually a fairly sizable tech community in the Tampa Bay region – it just doesn’t always involve early stage startups like the ones you would see featured on sites like TechCrunch. Developers here often seem content to work at larger firms, like in banking, healthcare, and of course, given MacDill’s presence, for the military.

With Gazelle Lab, that may soon start to change.

The Lab was founded by Brent Britton, Bill Jackson, John Morrow, Marvin Scaff and Daniel James Scott, all of whom bring considerable knowledge and experience to the startups who participate in this 3-month program. Britton has been helping companies for more than 20 years in Boston, San Francisco and the Silicon Valley, New York, and Florida. Bill Jackson is a Professor of Entrepreneurship and Innovation and the Director of the Sustainable Entrepreneurship & Innovation Alliance at USF St. Petersburg’s College of Business. John Morrow is the Entrepreneur-In-Residence with the Sustainable Entrepreneurship & Innovation Alliance at USF. The experienced software entrepreneur and technology innovator Marvin Scaff and entrepreneur and author Daniel James Scott round out the group.

Ideally, the startups that launch here will remain here, bringing much-needed jobs to the Tampa Bay area. That may prove to be a challenge – after all, as many VC’s will still tell you that your startup’s location still matters. A lot. But in reality, kick-ass companies can be built anywhere, so it may as well be Tampa Bay. Tampa Bay: where the housing is affordable, the white sand beaches can be enjoyed year-round and where others’ tourist attractions are just our weekend activities. (Yes, Tampa resident here. I like it, too).

Tampa Bay has another benefit which Gazelle Lab happily taps into: the University of South Florida. The accelerator is a part of the Sustainable Entrepreneurship & Innovation Alliance at USF St. Petersburg’s College of Business, which means it’s in a unique position to leverage the expertise of the student and faculty’s expertise. As a part of the Gazelle Lab program, the startups are asked tough questions by USF entrepreneurship majors who help the companies with their due diligence.

And, as a TechStars Network member, Gazelle Lab has access to other TechStar resources, including mentorship and hosting deals and discounts. It also offers the usual benefits of an incubator, like free office space, local mentors, legal assistance and, of course, seed stage funding. Each of the companies gets up to $18,000 ($6,000 per founder) in exchange for Gazelle’s 6% stake. The group is now looking to raise a $3 million dollar fund which will keep the program going for another five years.

Based on this first round of startups (below), that investment may be worth it.

And now, the new launches:

Got friends in the States? Make some right now. The annual Black Friday tech sales are on, and there are massive savings to be had on Apple according to The Sun.

The Sun reports that Apple will shave £101 off the normal selling price of the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and iMac computers. The paper also writes that there could be £39 savings on iPads, £26 off iPods and £7 off iPod Nanos.

The Daily Mail reports that the Apple savings will be more like $101 off the the Macbook Pro, Macbook Air and iMac.

Best Buy in the states will be offering 40% off big screen TVs along with free-shipping.

Games are also being heavily reduced, including Battlefield 3, Batman: Arkham City and Gears of War 3.

While the sales don’t extend to the UK, the postal service does. So now is the time to re-acquaint yourself with that long-lost American pen pal if you want cheap games and gadgets in time for Christmas.

“You’re a copycat!” “No, you’re the copycat!” Apple and Samsung have entered the pre-trial discovery period in their dispute over whose smartphones and tablets violate whose  intellectual property. In hopes of securing evidence that even Samsung’s customers mistake its products for iPhones and iPads, Apple has requested that Samsung turn over records of customer service calls where one company’s products were confused with the other’s.

That evidence could help Apple ban sales of Samsung’s Galaxy 10.1 tablet in major markets, so the South Korean electronics company is trying to frame the request as unfeasible. Samsung has now formally denied the request, citing that the request’s broad scope would include calls where customers criticize Apple’s products, which are supposedly so numerous that collecting them from calls where their products were confused would be take too much time and effort.

Yep, Samsung’s defense is that it is flooded with hate calls about another company’s products — products that are consistently rated as having sky-high customer satisfaction. The denial proudly claims customers frequently call Samsung to rave about their products and rage against Apple’s. This seems unlikely, as most people hate calling customer service as much the problems they call about. It may be difficult for Samsung to convince the court to uphold the denial on the grounds that enough users go to such the trouble just to complement them.

Here’s the full-text of Samsung’s flimsy excuse, courtesy of Edible Apple:

For example, it is possible that Samsung customers may have contacted the call centers to comment on how they disliked their previous Apple product, but enjoy using their Samsung product. This would not be responsive to Apple’s requests, because the consumer is not expressing any confusion as to the source of the product he or she was calling about.

If Apple can attain these records, it might find logs of customers asking where to find iPhone or iPad features on Samsung devices, or referring to Samsung features by their Apple titles, such as saying “FaceTime” instead of “video chat”. The holy grail would be Samsung customers calling up and actually thinking they own a device manufactured or associated with Apple because their designs are so similar. The thin excuse seems to indicate Samsung has something to hide.

Even if it did receive a lot of these Apple-bashing calls, it’s unclear whether that would actually make it significantly more difficult to comb through the records. Samsung’s going to need a better excuse. Otherwise, Apple may be able to leverage its popularity and visibility to reference mentions of its buzzwords, ingrained in Americans through marketing, as evidence of intellectual property infringement.

Korean electronics giant Samsung today confirmed it was in the final stages of signing a deal with Google to utilise its Android-based software to power its new Internet-connected television sets, but declined to reveal when new sets would become available, Yonhap News reports.

Samsung, which has enjoyed success with its own Smart TV software platform, would provide Google’s revamped TV platform with increased exposure, bringing it to a wider audience following its lacklustre launch in October 2010 which saw device maker Logitech lose a reported $100 million on Revue sales and poor showing in the EMEA region.

Samsung had originally supported the platform, but manufactured set-top boxes instead of bundling it with the televisions’ own software .

Yoon Book-keun, president of Samsung’s digital media business, confirmed earlier reports by noting that the company was in final talks with the search giant, adding that it has not yet decided whether it will showcase its new televisions at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas commencing in January

Samsung joins LG in voicing its support for the new Google TV platform, with LG expected to reveal its own Google-powered sets at the CES trade show, according to a report by Bloomberg. The adoption of the platform would see Samsung compete directly with other Google partners, but also Apple with its own iOS-powered set-top box.

Sony remains the only Google partner to have backed the project since its launch.

It’s an interesting decision by Samsung, a company that has already built its own Smart TV platform. In October, the company announced that it had surpassed 1,000 apps on its Samsung Apps TV store, also noting that it has now facilitated over 10 million downloads since the platform launched. The television-centric app store was reported to be handling around 50,000 downloads each day, as its users began to realise the potential of third-party tools and services that can extend the capabilities of their TVs.

The adoption of Google’s Android-powered platform demonstrates Samsung’s continued support for the Linux-based platform, software that powers its most popular smartphone devices, including the Samsung Galaxy S II. Developers and vendors are encouraged to create their own apps and services to extend the platform, making money from downloads in the process.
